‘Moon Pod’ charcoal drawing on antique wood
4″ x 6″ charcoal drawing on acid-free paper, mounted on wood from an antique clock with pyrography embellishments and 22 karat gold leaf over clay bole. 7″ x 12″ finished dimensions. D-ring for hanging attached to back.
This series of small charcoal drawings began after my father passed away in January. I wanted to create, but the idea of making decisions about materials and media caused me anxiety, which I was trying to escape from. I decided to choose one. Charcoal on paper. No color. No decisions. And small in scale. This series grew roots. Here I mounted the drawings on wood from the back of an antique clock. I like re-using materials with a history. Pyrography embellishments and the traditional Byzantine iconography technique of using gold leaf over clay bole sprouted after allowing myself to simplify my initial process. There is harmony and balance found in letting go.
